In fact, when they were first introduced they were often called a Macintosh. The name Macintosh referred to the original creator of raincoats, whose name was Charles Macintosh. Charles Macintosh designed and created the first raincoat in the 1820s.
Raincoats were invented as more of a utilitarian and practical item of clothing than anything else. Its main purpose was simply to keep a woman warm and dry if they had to be outside during the rain.
This coat was quite original due to the fact that it also came with a head covering or a hoodie, as they are known today. What this did was allow women to cover their heads, keep their hair dry without the need for an additional piece of clothing, such as a hat or scarf.
While this particular feature was a very welcome addition to the raincoat it was not always preferred by women. The solution to this was a detachable hoodie that could be removed if the wearer of the raincoat so desired.
Over the years, raincoats for women became less of a practical article of clothing and more of a fashion statement. During the 1960s women’s raincoats reflected the fashion of the time. It wasn’t out of the ordinary to see transparent raincoats that were made of either vinyl or PVC material so that a woman’s outfit could still be appreciated, even in the rain.
In the 1970s, Raincoats for women were extended into longer coats and this gave rise to the popularity of the trench coat. Over the following years raincoats have continued to represent different styles and fashions of the time from three-quarter loose belt raincoats to bright and vivid colors, and much more.
